Prevention and Improvement

Out of our greatest disasters, whether personal or public, come our greatest opportunities for change. Looking at the devastation in Haiti, what do you think could be done in the future to both prevent this level of loss and help Haiti get back on its feet as a nation?

  1. i think that the only thing that we really could have done was come out of our own little bubble. From my experainces overseas as a military brat, I have learned a few things. One of them is that Americans are selfish most of the time. We live inour own little buble and don't care about countries we don't need to. I think that's the main reason why more help isn't being sent down to Haiti, and why this wasn't prevented.

Oops, wait. So sorry i misread the post. Teehee!

I think that to help Haiti, we just need to reach out. Not to Haiti so much, but to orginizations that are already reacing out to Haiti. Lets go back to the thing Mr. Everret was talking about yesterday. Yes, we can raise half a million dollars. So are we going to juct give the nation of Haiti a half a million dollar check? What good will that do them? They don't have anything left.
No, we have to give to the orginisations such as red cross, the salvation army, and other people who are flying down there help out the nation in need. =)

  2. We would have to change the attitude of people. Something isn't important because its getting media coverage. Its important because you care about those people and want to help. people tend to forget things once the tele stops feeding it to them. what we can do is make them a missions trip destination, so that people who actually care are the ones available to Haitians.

  3. Like Mr. Everett told us, the buildings down there were not anywhere near safe to begin with. This is their opportunity to improve their buildings so that a if a disaster such as an earthquake strikes again, they won't have to deal with devastation of this magnitude. I know that yes, this will cost them more money that they don't have, but I'm pretty sure that's where we come in :) In addition...this might be a good time to look at some of their government leaders and really try to make it a true democracy.
